Cardiovascular risk factors highly associated with erectile dysfunction in the Look AHEAD trial
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a frequent comorbidity in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and increasingly considered a surrogate marker of endothelial dysfunction as well as sentinel predictor of new-onset macroangiopathic events. A total of 373 eligible males, in a committed relationship, participating in the Look AHEAD trial were recruited so as to determine the prevalence and correlates of ED in overweight men with T2DM. Overall, 49.8% of the men had mild or moderate degrees of ED, and 24.8% reported complete ED. Among sexually active men, 42.6% had sought medical help while 39.7% had used ED medication. Multivariable analysis revealed that ED was significantly associated with age, baseline HbA1c, hypertension history and metabolic syndrome whereas cardiorespiratory fitness was found to be protective of ED. In conclusion, in obese men with T2DM participating in the Look AHEAD study, cardiovascular risk factors were highly associated with ED whereas cardiorespiratory fitness was shown to be protective.
