Among 141 patients scheduled for coronary angiography, with no previous history of acute myocardial ischemia or glucose metabolism disorder, an oral glucose tolerance test detected an impaired glucose regulation in 40.4% and diabetes mellitus was diagnosed in 22.7%; these percentages increased up to 45.3% and 26.7%, respectively, in the patient subgroup needing percutaneous angioplasty. The authors recommend to conduct an oral glucose tolerance test in all patients with a fasting plasma glucose ≥90 mg/dl undergoing coronary angiography.
